cannot connect android phone via mtp[SOLVED]

Hello

I have netrunner rolling installed with all the updates to date. I cannot
tranfer files data between my PC and the android phone using mtp. Dolphin
detects the phone but soon throws up an error when I try to transfer files.
Konqueror does not even detect the phone.

the mtp kio-service is known to be buggy in dolphin, but in my
laptop which runs netrunner 17 horizon (ubuntu based) konqueror
works like a charm. As soon as the device is connected though usb
it appears in the side bar of konqueror and I can transfer files
without any issue.
But in rolling konqueror does not even detect the phone.
I have all packages related to mtp installed, including kio-extras.

Any solution will be appreciated.

Ubuntu still has support for the Plasma 4 desktop (KDE SC 4) available, this is why Konqueror still has support for MTP under Ubuntu (kio-mtp package). Support for Plasma 4 has been dropped (removed) from Manjaro / Arch Linux upstream: https://www.archlinux.org/news/dropping-plasma-4/

MTP is buggy in general, I have one device that I can access, and another one that I can not, well that is without modifying MTP.
Could you please post the error message your getting?

You can also try enabling support via Konqueror / dolphin4 by installing kio-mtp-git from the AUR:

yaourt -S kio-mtp-git

Most likely a buggy mtp protocol on your smartphone I suppose.
If you have mtp-tools installed you can execute this command in a terminal

mtp-detect

to see all relevant information for your device (device must be plugged in)

Did that. But still no change in the behavior of dolphin/konqueror

I tried to install kio-mtp-git from the AUR but it failed with error
due to conflicts with existing filesystem.
Did not proceed further as I did not want to mess with my existing system which is
otherwise working alright

kio-mtp (a separate package for kde sc 4) is now integrated into kio-extras in kf5.
Maybe it is a bug there or that might be even possible the kio-mtp-git version is newer than the one in kio-extras :stuck_out_tongue:

So for now I would recommend using something like mtpfs (if its available) which mounts mtp devices via fuse so every filemanager and application should have access to it.

Not exactly, the kio-mtp-git AUR entry is the KDE SC 4 version and should add back into Konqueror and Dolphin4 MTP support. https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/kio-mtp-git

OK, we added that file ourselves in upstream Manjaro to the ISO’s for compatibility with dolphin prior to the frameworks port. This file has since been removed from the new batch of ISO’s when kio-mtp was removed upstream. The new location for Plasma 5 based applications, provided by kio-extras is now usr/share/solid actions/solid_mtp.desktop, you will need to either delete /usr/share/apps/solid/actions/solid_mtp.desktop yourself first, or use the --force switch on yaourt.

Great. Following your instructions I could install kio-mtp-git from AUR and now
konquerer detects and allows transfer of files to and from the connected android
phone. Dolphin still has problems, but that I think is a known bug.
Konqueror works alright.
