New install - system update error

Hi all. New user, first post here.

I just downloaded last version of Netrunner and felt very well impressed while running the live CD s

So went on and installed the distro.

Just after reboot I was faced with a problem that in case its difficult to resolve, will be a show stop.

From the command line I entered apt-get update. This is the output:

Err http://ppa.launchpad.net raring Release.gpg
Something wicked happened resolving ‘ppa.launchpad.net:http’ (-11 - System error)
Err http://archive.ubuntu.com raring Release.gpg

Ign http://packages.netrunner-os.com enigma-1306 Release

So, nor command line nor Muon can download anything from the install servers.

Can someone please give an hand?

Do you have general internet connection present ?
You could try

ping netrunner-os.com

from within a terminal to test it.

The internet connection is working, I’m posting from it.

The output of “ping netrunner-os.com” is “ping: unknown host netrunner-os.com

But if I ping your IP address, I get this:
PING 54.246.99.99 (54.246.99.99) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 54.246.99.99: icmp_req=1 ttl=249 time=88.7 ms

Hope this will help.

I tryed to update via Synaptic, and got this error message:

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the list directory

The synaptic error looks like another packagemanagement process is blocking it.
You cannot ping netrunner-os.com but you can browse websites? This looks very odd to me.

Yes, it looks odd.

If I ping the url name it doesn’t work. but when I ping your IP, its ok.

So, I looked into the task manager to try to guess which process could be bloking Synaptic, but unfortunately the info there is too cryptic for me to understand it.

I’d like to add that I multiboot 5 more Distros and I never had a single problem with my internet connection.

My only guess so far is checking the nameserver.(so check /etc/resolv.conf and maybe set the correct one there [you need sudo rights for this]) But when netrunner-os.com is working in your browser and not with ping then I really don’t know whats wrong there. Are you using a proxy or are you sitting behind a firewall which blocks pings ?

Hi
just re-installed Netrunner 13.06 and I am getting the same thing with using sudo apt-get update

advice please…

Thanks Zeb…

Please see my last thread and check your dns server. Please also try to set 8.8.8.8 as temporary nameserver and try again.

Will do when I get back… just for info, install of another distro, update (updating now) working perfectly well (LM).

Thanks

Zeb

There is always the possibility that the server of the ppa is down. But I doubt it.

Hi

Did that and still no joy with update or upgrade, both not working with same error messages previously noted

Zeb…

OK No more suggestions - I am re-downloading from server this time not torrent.

Will burn to clean DVD - not my usual DVD-RW and report back after new install

Zeb…

I don’t think that this will make a difference as the system worked and you only had a networking issue. But let’s see maybe it’ll work out somehow.

Well, either the issues resolved themselves overnight or re-installing worked as update ran fine and I am just doing an upgrade now

So for me - this thread is [SOLVED] but I did not start it so lets hope opsnet comes back and advises us where they stand

Thanks to all for help and suggestions :

Zeb…

ops…

Don’t mark it solved yet.

I’m just going to redownload and reinstall, as I’v already tryed everything that come to my mind at no avail.

I’ll feed back.

Thanks

No. Didn’t work.
I’ll wait for the next release.

A also had several problems with the “waiting for other transactions to finish”. Kiling the “qaptworker script” never worked. Only a reboot. Someone started a thread about that.

So, I multiboot 5 distros, I use to install every new release of two of them and then I distro hoppe every 6/12 months, to stay on the bleeding edge. So far I coulnd’t find a single Kde relese who suits me. Netrunner was going to be the first. So, I really feel sorry.

Thanks to all who helped.

Sorry to hear that opsnet
quick question when you rebuilt netrunner… Did you format all partitions that you were gonna use? because I know that some residual stuff hangs around in /home. I am still too new to know if this would effect it but it seems too.

Any ways - good luck distro hopping… I enjoyed that too but I am gonna settle now on Netrunner… It’s just so good

Zeb…

Yes, I allways format partitions before installing a new distro. I have an excelent way to deal with a unique /Home common to all distros, but it is completelly independent from each one one of them. I may post how to do it in here if I find it feet somewhere in the Forum.

Regarding Netrunner your’re right. Its just so good. An outstanding Kde implementation with good performance and excelent design. Enjoy it.

As I’ve finished my distro hopping (there’s nothing else of interest to try), I’ll keep the netrunner install for some and will have a look in the forum, just in case…
