NVIDIA GeForce 8200M GPU. Having major problems...

Replaced ‘quiet splash’ with ‘nomodeset’
now I am stuck at
started authorization manager

So it hangs there. No other tty accessible ?
Hmm… thats a bummer. So nouveau does not seem to be the only issue you have.

Well…hmmmph???
This pc is a challenge. Netrunner runs awesome on the other laptops.
I cant give this pc back to this lady and have it be all buggy and what not.
She would not know what to do with it. She is older and you know how that goes.
So I officially give up. And I “RARELY” ever give up.
I installed Zorin OS and it is working good right out of the box?
So…I have no idea why. It is going really smooth on the computer.

So you removed Netrunner already ?
Doesn’t help us really to figure out what the other issue was.
Normally at least a tty console is something you can boot into and then at least install another (older) kernel which had at least fix the nouveau problem.
If you still have it installed please try to get onto one tty after it “hangs” by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 or Ctrl+Alt+F2 and so on.
Maybe you really get into a tty console and login prompt so you can at least try to repair from there.

If this does not work you have always the chance to use a live system (one that actually works. I assume the Netrunner Rolling one works for you otherwise you wouldn’t be able to install it) and chroot into the installed system from the live environment to executes commands and perform the installation of an older kernel if necessary.

So don’t give up. There are plenty of things still to try to fix this issue.

Ooops, did I forget to mention that you would need to hit alt + F2 to get a log in prompt.

Netrunner Rolling (Manjaro) uses systemd and logind, which in turn use VTNR, so when Xorg loads it gets put on TTY1 by default, I apologize for forgetting to mention this.

I would love nothing more than to keep going after this one because
I love figuring things out.
Only I am feeling like my knowledge level is really lacking here these past 2 days.
Like for example tty…I dont even know what that means.
So all of the advice and terms that are given to me I run to google and
do my best to figure them out.

In comparison from my putzing around here. Netrunner is so much better.
Seems so much easier for a linux noob. Navigating my way around and so forth.

I feel so defeated. This computer does not belong to me so I would have to ask
her how long she doesn’t mind parting with it. If I wanted to start over from scratch.

Oh and ya I hate the stupid dock style applets they have in it.
It seems fun at first and then gets annoying really fast.
Like on MacOSX computers.
I have a damn headache from it.

I just looked and has the X.org X server–Noeveau display driver from xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (open source)

Is that a non-free driver?

Hey guys,
Ok…she said she is ok if I have the computer for a couple of days yet.
The Zorin is just too flashy and annoying. I dont even know what I am
going over with my cursor and it switches desktops and I didnt click.
I hate that…the clock is ugly and just #ew! ew ew ew

My kids have basketball Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
I will check back when I get home tonight to see if you guys still want to help me.
But I wouldn’t be able to get working on it until Moday morning.
Do you think that it is possible for us to get this accomplished?

It should be no problem.

Yes of course we will help you, that is what starbuck, leszek and myself are here for.

And to answer your first question about the nouveau drivers, no those are the Nvidia open source (Free) drivers, the proprietary Non-free drivers have the name nvidia or nvidia legacy in them.

Hey guys,
Just touching base. I have 2 kids home sick from school today.
So I wont be working on computers today.

The good news…my 14 year old daughters basketball team took 2nd place out of 32 teams.
We played 7 games with only 5 players. So taking 2nd place is a HUGE accomplishment!
My daughter scored 60 points on Saturday and 25 on Sunday!
Kudos Sierra!!!

ok…that will be my only Mom brag for today.
