Upgrading from 4.2 to 12.12.1

Upgrade instructions:

http://www.netrunner-os.com/upgrade-instructions-4-2-12-12/

Please use this thread for questions and troubleshooting.

I upgraded following the directions given. All went well, except that when I accessed Synaptic Package Manager it said there were broken packages / dependencies. I checked it out and it was the Muon Discover - Software Center. I tagged it for re-installation and it ran through a very long list of unpacking, preparing and installing. Once that was completed I clicked on Reload and updated from there. So, I am at Linux 3.5.0-22 generic and KDE 4.9.5.

Thanks for the instructions. You were correct, it did take upwards of 1 1/2 hours. Maybe I need to rethink the upgrade process. Thanks again for a truly wonderful distribution. I like this Linux Distro very much. I already gave out one Live DVD with the latest Netrunner version on it to a friend.

It looks like you only performed one of the two “dist-upgrades” present in the script. You need to call it twice to force calligra-data and muon-discover to replace their previous versions (they overwrite other packages’ data and the maintainers upstream didn’t properly declare this in the packages with a control->replace statement). Running the dist-upgrade twice, like it’s done in the script, works around this issue.

@txm:
did you use the script like this:
wget http://community.netrunner-os.com/upgrade-4.2.sh
chmod a+rx upgrade-4.2.sh
sudo ./upgrade-4.2.sh

or did you use the commands from within the script manually by executing them one by one?

After the upgrade, I had to do:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm

and then select lightdm in order to get the same experience I have on my work machine that had 12.12 installed from scratch. Also, if you’re using the default background artwork, it disappears.

Otherwise, the upgrade ran very smoothly.

@starbuck

I copied the commands as was outlined in the initial posting:

To perform the upgrade, open a terminal (yakuake or konsole) and type the following commands:

wget http://community.netrunner-os.com/upgrade-4.2.sh
chmod a+rx upgrade-4.2.sh
sudo ./upgrade-4.2.sh

I did not execute each command separately. It was more of : copy commands, paste, Enter Key

Does that help ?

txm0523

Thanks,

It does help. Although I don’t have enough info to take action.

If anyone else is experiencing issues, please make sure you paste the error messages you’re getting.

I can’t reproduce the problem here, everything is going smooth in relation to Muon, but mileage may vary depending on what is installed on your computer.

Anyway, I’m glad you got it working and I hope we’ll get more info so that we can update the script if it affects others.

I attached the entire output of konsole. I started a thread in Install and Set-up last night about invalid package source. Since the out-put of the system is for all intents and purposesidentical I’m attaching the output of runnng the scripts. I’ll keep watching for solutions. Thanks,
Charlie

I would be very thankful if someone could help me with this issue.

Thank you and regards,
Gnomius

Well, after hours of googling around, I have finally fixed my issue.

If someone is interested, it was a problem with the ATI drivers, that can be solved removing “fglrx” and installing “fglrx-updates” package.

Regards!

I upgraded yesterday and it took almost 3 hours but everything seemed fine afterward. Then, this morning, there was a long list of updates and a reboot required afterward. When I rebooted I got a screen with this:
Staring VirtualBox kernel modules
saned disabled; edit /etc/default/saned
Stopping saved kernel messages
Stopping anac(h)ronistic cron
Starting anac(h)ronistic cron
Stopping anac(h)ronistic cron
and then it just stays on that screen and dosen’t boot. Help please?

Well, nevermind. I couldn’t go more than 2 days with my computer down so I burned a dvd and did a fresh install. Still having some issues but that’s for another thread. I’ve been using Netrunner for several versions now and not once has an upgrade actually worked. It tarnishes an otherwise wonderful distro. My previous favorite distro, which I used for several years and many versions, never failed to upgrade. I only had to install the one time and upgraded from then on, so I know it can be done. Looking forward to smoother upgrades with Netrunner sometime in the future.
