where is libav?

I need a program to capture mpg in real time to convert old VHS tapes to DVD. libav seems to be exaclty what I need and it says its already installed on my computer. But where is it and how do I open it?

Libav is a command line tool which can be executed via the terminal by typing in libav. It needs parameters for input and output aswell as encoding options for audio and video if you want to convert something. You can open a manual by typing in man libav (use arrow keys to navigate and q to quit)

If you try to record something from a tv card (analog input) I guess libav won’t work good for you. You can try VLC or me-tv for this. Both applications provide an easy to use graphical user interface.
