There are several reasons why i prefer apper :
-it’s integrated with KDE desktop : Right-click in a menu, you can uninstall software. Click on or download a package, a dialog from apper will pop to install it (like pamac)
-It’s more nice to use. I largely prefer the UI, and the notifier gives the opportunity to update from there
With built-in KDE feel popup shows Number of packages to go on updates with actual progress of individual files.

Plus feel apper is a part of instead apart from KDE. As always have the terminal or Octopi for more power use when needed. But want the tray apper to do basic updates if possible. As much more informative on packages progress being on a Wifi connection.
.

Apper is Kpackagekit, that is the reason for that message and if you look there is no kpackagekit in the repositories:
https://userbase.kde.org/KPackageKit
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apper
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pacman_GUI_Frontends#KDE.2FQt

However, keep in mind that packagekit (the backend that Apper uses) can not install anything from the AUR, you will need to use Octopi, PacmanXG, etc. or the command line for that.

“can not install anything from the AUR, you will need to use Octopi, PacmanXG, etc. or the command line for that.”

Yep that was my intention power tools when needing more control or AUR: and Apper in system tray for general updates. Except special cases where I might need a workaround in the term or such.

And Octopi installed but want to replace Octopi-Notifier with Apper. And let Apper do my general updates.

So ignore the warning and good to go?

.

Yes, you should be fine.

Personally, I prefer to use PacmanXG over octopi myself, however for testing purposes on my Manjaro KDE Plasma 5 0.9.0-dev installation (test computer), I have to stick with Octopi.

Soon, The KF5 port of the Muon Software Suite version 3.0 will bring compatibility with Arch Linux packages via the libalpm backend to packagekit:

Thanks for the helpful info. Yep many hate apper being less capable and featureless. But has exactly what I want in a system tray updater. Integrated well in KDE. Click on Panel popup showing individual packages with progress bar for each package. Top shows Packages to Go/Total numbers. Hover over date last checked for updates. As on a sometimes wonky Wifi connection so need to see how fast packages and still downloading. As sometimes my connection just drops for no reason and requires me to manually click Wifi on/off to get it seen and connected to again.

And still have Octopi and the terminal so have the power when I need it. Will do some reading and check out PacmanXG as unaware of that one.

Thanks again for all your help. Muchly Appreciated!
.

PacmanXG isn’t tied to any DE, and is considered to be the Swiss army knife of GUI based package managers.

Seems Apper is a bust. Uninstalled Octopi-Notifier then installed apper.
Got some errors but got the command OK at the end.

Rebooted and tried to run Apper from the menu and got errors when I clicked on updates.

So looks like something somewhere is broken.

.

I am not sure but my last known update on packagekit on arch/manjaro was that it isn’t ready yet. This would mean all apps like apper basing on packagekit won’t work.

Try this first:

sudo pacman -Scc sudo rm -r /var/lib/pacman/db.lck sudo pacman -Syy
Now try Apper again.

I’ve used it in the past, then the PackageKit libalpm backend broke for a while, but last I checked that had been fixed back in Sept. or Oct.

You don’t seem to be connected to the internet, or your mirror list is messed up.

Can you post the contents of your /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist file?

How when I try to post the pasted contents of mirrorlist I get.

Tired both before. And even to insert here and nope No/Go Spam detect.

Got a snapshot image of first half of list if that helps?

.

OK the file looks good, check your internet connection, you must be offline.

You can run this command to reorganize your mirrors according to speed:

sudo pacman-mirrors -g

Once you figure out why your not connected that is.

:: Generated and saved ‘/etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist’ mirrorlist.

I’ve been connected and not having any other issues browsing or when updated with Octopi last couple of weeks.
Tho due seem to get a lot of errors from jmu when doing updates.

mirror.jmu.edu : The requested URL returned error: 404 Not Found as I posted earlier in this thread.

This mirror no longer exists, you can safely remove it from the list:
http://vm1.sorch.info/manjaro/stable/

kdesu kate /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

Strange as not in the list checked and used find and no
http://vm1.sorch.info/manjaro/stable/ is not in my mirrorlist

That’s not that strange the previous command I gave more than likely removed it, I just wanted to be sure,

Okey Dokey then Apper must be broken as boot up to desktop it does it check on system panel which hangs
And clicking on notification close gives me a even stranger message.

Opening up Apper and clicking on updates continues to give error as posted here earlier in thread.

Checking link of Apper
says requires PackageKit >= 0.8.5
But showing installed is Version 0.7.6-12
But also noticed is link to old 0.80? and we are on 1.0.7.2-7 which is newer?

So am I misunderstanding something? Which is quite likely.
